I Do My Best Work In My Sleep

Well...honey, I finally fixed the front porch, I cleaned the gutter spout
Mowed the grass, took out the trash, and cleared the basement out
And I fixed that leaky faucet, the one that always drips
And by the way, the dispose-all's no longer on the fritz

Then I sat down and wrote a lovely letter to my mother-in-law
Finished up a painting, framed it, hung it on the wall
Then I picked up my gee-tar, wrong a song for you, and then
I dashed off another chapter of my novel number ten

I do my best work in my sleep
I'm takin' care of business when I'm countin' sheep
So if you hear me snore, please don't come knockin' on my door
Let me get the job done if you please
I do my best work in my sleep

So you see, I'm exhausted by the time that I'm awake
I'm foggy and I'm groggy, I can't seem to concentrate
I better go lie down again, there's still a lot to do
Another ten or twenty things that I must be gettin' to

I do my best work in my sleep
I'm takin' care of business when I'm countin' sheep
So if you hear me snore, please don't come knockin' on my door
Let me get the job done if you please
I do my best work in my sleep
